Remarks from Summit Participants:
"I want to congratulate you again for organizing this conference and stepping into the middle of a very difficult debate. And we need to understand why it is so difficult and not be daunted by the task or scared away from wading into the middle of this and finding a solution." Vice President Al Gore"I want to particularly commend the summit organizers. I know how much time and effort goes into a conference like this, and I think it has been very important and very rewarding for us all." Attorney General Janet Reno
"I want to welcome all the teachers, businesses, school administrators, law enforcement officials, students, other advocates for the family and for family involvement in education who are here. Also, I want to extend greetings to the many concerned individual who are participating in the conference on line across the nation." U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley
"Let me begin by thanking the organizers of this summit for bringing us together today to begin a dialogue about the important issue of child online safety... This Summit offers a prototype of the kind of approach weÕre promoting around the world to resolve Internet policy questions." U.S. Secretary of Commerce William M. Daley
"Only through a creative and flexible approach to this problem is it possible to hasten development of a safe environment for children on the Internet. That is why I'm excited about the new initiatives and the relationships that have been forged as a result of this summit." Attorney General Janet Reno
"I encouraged them to do it, and I'm glad they're doing it. I wish them well."
President Bill Clinton as quoted by the Associated Press, 12/1/97."I applaud you all for holding this critical series of discussions on protecting children in the information age. These meetings are a very important first step in reaching our mutual goal for making Internet safer for children." Rep. Robert Goodlatte (R-VA)
"I applaud you for taking the initiative today towards a non-regulatory solution to this issue... With citizenship comes responsibility, therefore, some industry involvement in developing tools to help with Internet content makes more sense to me than waiting for Congress to do it," Speaker of House Newt Gingrich
"This Summit and the series of Summits to follow provide a useful opportunity to bring together a diverse group of interest to shape effective responses to the needs of children and families in an online world." Laurie Lipper, the ChildrenÕs Partnership
